#1. Chichén Itzá
In the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula sits Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico's most prized archaeological sites. Most of the ruins and buildings were built between the 5th and 13th centuries and display plenty of Mayan influenced buildings and carvings as well as Itzan influences stone carvings. The massive Temple of Kukulkan (El Castillo) is a huge pyramid-shaped building on the site and the massive columns in the Temple of a Thousand Warriors are not to be missed.

#2. Tulum
Tulum is the only Mayan site alongside the sea and these ancient ruins are small compared to many other ancient sites, but well worth the visit. The gorgeous beach offers a picture-postcard pretty setting and swimming is allowed here.

#3. Chankanaab National Park
Spend a day roaming around the glorious gardens at the Chankanaab National Park or grab a snorkel and enjoy the sights among the reefs just beneath the ocean's surface. You have the option of booking for a dolphin encounter at the National Park, where wild dolphins will come up to be petted and swim around.

#4. Playa Palancar
The Playa Palancar (Palancar Reef) boasts stunning coral outcrops that tower more than 20 feet out of the sand. Grab your snorkel and swim through the tunnels created by beautiful coral growths in the reef and immerse yourself in the teeming schools of fish that surround you while you swim.

The Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is a great adventurous day for everyone. No matter what your preference, you'll find something to entertain you here. #6. Felipe Xicotencatl Shipwreck
Take a charter tour out to the Felipe Xicotencatl shipwreck and enjoy a day of diving. The diving tour operators offer diving instruction, so take the plunge and swim around the wreck of this enormous ship with the plentiful fish and marine life.

The fishing around Cozumel is magnificent. No matter whether you prefer deep sea fishing, bottom fishing or fly fishing, there's something to suit everyone here. Most charters offer lunch throughout your tour.

#8. Isla de Pasion (Passion Island)
This tiny island offers the most stunning remote beaches and amazing, unexplored diving spots. If you've ever fancied spending a little time on a deserted island, then you'll really get away from it all on the Isla de Pasion. Boat tours out to the island are available from the port of Cozumel.

#9. Parque Punta Sur (Punta Sur Ecological Park)
This wonderful nature reserve allows you to view Mexico's tropical ecosystems at the same time as enjoying snorkeling or hiking or just roam around the park until you find one of the many observation towers dotted around the park. Climb to the top and marvel at the stunning views across jungle and ocean.

No matter where you go in Cozumel, the lure of the crystal clear waters and surrounding reefs is enough to tempt anyone into grabbing a snorkel to see what's happening beneath the surface. The sheer amount of stunning reefs, coral outcroppings and teeming marine and aquatic life is worth the swim!

Best Time To Visit

Beach - Cozumel, Mexico

The stunning tropical weather in Cozumel means it's gloriously warm and sunny for most of the year. Tourist season is usually from December through to March, so you may find things are a little more expensive at this time of the year. The average temperatures should range between 75-80F during the day.

July and August can become quite hot with temperatures rising up to 95F during the day and not falling much below 80F at night. Hurricane season is around September and October, although these are not overly common.

Travel Shopping

Shopping - Cozumel, Mexico

The most concentrated amount of shopping locations seem to be centered around San Miguel's zócalo (Plaza del Sol). The shopping district runs in an 8-block strip along the waterfront and several blocks inland, so you'll find plenty to choose from.

You can find some wonderful Uncrate hammocks, leather goods, embroidered cloth, traditional lace and clothing, silver, jewelry, ceramics, wood carvings and handicrafts all over Cozumel.

Keep in mind that you may not always find the cheapest bargains in the tourist areas, so if you're willing to wander around and find hidden markets and stalls, you can often find some great bargains.

The currency in Cozumel is the Mexican peso, although you should find almost everyone accepts US dollars.

Carnaval
During February and March the Carnaval is a celebration of the approaching Lent. Enjoy parades, cockfights, fireworks, great local food, traditional and modern music and plenty of dancing.

Feast of El Cedral
In late April is the Feast of El Cedral, where the locals hold a massive feast in honor of the founding of Cozumel.

Independence Day
On September 16 all of Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain in 1821. Celebrations include fireworks, folk dancing, mariachi bands, food and drink and much, much more.
